How to Bake Sausage in 30 minutes

bake sausage

It’s cold outside – we get it. Sometimes when it’s the middle of the winter it can be daunting to fire up the grill for something as simple as sausages. We decided to try a more convenient recipe – using our kitchen oven to bake sausage. We love this recipe because it can be cooked in as little as thirty minutes. You can also use the baking sheet to put on any other veggies like peppers and onions that go great with Italian sausage. Learn how to bake sausage below!

How to cook baked sausage?

Once you’ve selected your sausage, it’s time to prep and get things ready to cook your meal. We’re partial to Premio sausages, but often times we’ll purchase what the grocery store has on sale. This also works great for Chorizo, or other types of sausage like Chicken. While we are prepping the oven, and our veggies we like to remove the sausage from the refrigerator to allow it to come to room temperature.

Line a Baking Sheet with Aluminum Foil or Parchment Paper

We love this recipe for so many reasons, but one of our favorites is the easy clean up. We always line our baking sheets with aluminum foil. We typically will use a sheet our two to ensure the whole baking sheet is covered. When baking sausages, some of the juices can come out. If you only have a single sheet it’s possible that some of the juices will slide underneath the foil. Not the end of the world by any means, but this is something that can be avoided with ample coverage of foil.

Preheat the Oven to 400 degrees F

We’ve tested baking sausage at a range of different temperatures from 350 to 375, but we’ve settled on 400 degrees as the most efficient cooking temperature. Baking sausage at 400 degrees will ensure it’s ready in thirty minutes.

Line Your Baking Sheet with Sausage and Vegetables

Now it’s time to line your baking sheet with sausage. Depending on how many sausage links you are cooking, you can even get away with using a smaller baking sheet. If we’re making a small batch, we’ll use a quarter baking sheet. If you’re making a small batch, but only have a large baking sheet, no problem. Feel free to use this extra space to roast any veggies like peppers and grilled onions.

Bake Sausage for 30 Minutes

Now that the sausage has come to room temperature, and the sausage, pepper and onions are prepped and on the baking sheet we’re ready to cook! The total cooking time for sausage in the oven should be around 30 minutes.

Although not necessary, we normally will flip the sausage at the 15 minute mark to ensure that it is cooked evenly.

What temperature should baked sausage be?

When making Italian Sausage, or any sausage really, you are shooting for an internal sausage temperature of 160 degrees F prior to serving. Use any kitchen thermometer or instant read thermometer to ensure that the sausage is cooked fully through. A general rule of thumb is when you pierce the sausage, the juices will run clear.

Does sausage need to rest?

While sausage doesn’t need to rest – it can be very hot when served immediately. We’ve all bitten into a sausage a little too quickly and found the juices can squirt out and scald everything from our tongues to the rough of our mouths. Avoid this by allowing to cool for five minutes prior to serving.

What can I make with baked sausage?

  • Sausage and peppers sandwiches using hoagie rolls or hot dog buns
  • Add a little protein to your pastas by adding sliced sausage
  • Breakfast sausage is another option – like to multi-task? Fire up the oven, or toaster oven while cooking scrambled eggs or pancakes
